Reproductive Physiology & Vet Care Of The Boar Flashcards
T or F: testes are fully descended at birth
True
2 phases where sperm proliferation occurs
- birth to 1 month
- 3 to 4 months
Spermare in epididymis @ age
4.5 months
Libido and ejaculation present @ what age
After 5 mos
Juvenile penis lacks _____ and is attached to prepuce by ______
- sigmoid flexure
- frenulum
Breedin soundness exam tests include
- locomotion
- atrophic rhinitis
- parasites
- infectious disease test
External genitalia soundness exam includes
- testicular palpation & measurements
- palpation of penis and sigmoid flexure
- eval of prepuce and preputial diverticulum
- exam of nipples
Semen collection methods
- double glove (vinyl) hand technique
- artificial vagina
- electroejaculation
(Afterwards give 2-4 days of sexual rest)
Pre-ejaculate contains
- prostatic & seminal vesicular fluid
- 5-15 mL
- clear
Bulbourethral gland produces
Gel fraction
Volume of semen usually prod.
- 1to 300 mL in young boar
- more than 500 mL in adult boars
Characteristics evaluated for semen
- motility
- morphology
- total sperm count
- concentration
Watery sperm conc.
0-200x10^6 ml
Milky semen conc.
200-500x10^6 mL
Creamy semen conc.
500-1000x10^6 mL
T or F: boar nees to be trained to use phantom. Needs to se other boars have their semen collected.
True
How many semen collections per week if older than 12 mos
2
Use what hormone before collectioin
PGF2-alpha
If boar is less than 18 mos, collect semen how often
Once every 7-10 days
If boar is 8-10 mos, collect semen how often
Once every 7 days
If boar is 10-12 mos, collect semen how often
Up to 3x in 14 day pd. Every 4-5 days.
Short-term semen extenders
Guarantee quality for a couple days
Long-term semen extenders
Maintain biological value of sperm up to one week or longer
Dose of semen is how many mL
80 mL
How many sperm per day of storage
1 billion
Temp semen is stored in w/ constant agitation
15-18 degrees celsius
W/ extender added, the final conc. Of semen should be
25-80x10^6 sperm/mL
Insemination dose formula
Volume x sperm per mL x motility x normal morphology/minimum insemination dose
Boar semen doesn’t respond well for cryopreservation b/c
- they aren’t protected by an egg yolk or milk proteins from the cold
- glycerol is toxic to them
- they have low cholesterol/phospholipid ratios in their membrane
What is the conception rate for frozen semen compared to fresh/cooled semen
20% lower
Issues seenwith semen collection/breeding males
- diverticulectomy
- testicular/scrotal hernia
- preputial prolapse
- persistent frenulum
Divertiulectomy procedure
- 5-8 cm incision on dosrsolat. Aspect of prepuce
- blunt dissect. Of both diverticular sacs
- ID neck of diverticulum
- place purse string suture around neck of diverticulum
- don’t tie off neck of diverticulum until grasped w/ allis forceps & inverted out preputial orifice
- tie knot, close w/ 2 layer continuous suture pattern
