Reproductive organs Flashcards
is a muscular canal that joins the cervix to the outside of the body. It can widen to accommodate a baby during delivery.
Vagina/Birth Canal
is the lowest part of the Uterus. A hole in the middle allows the sperm to enter and menstrual blood to exit. It also opens during delivery.
Cervix
is a hollow, pear-shaped organ that holds a fetus during pregnancy. This is divided by two parts; the cervix and the corpus.
Uterus
is the loose pouch-like sac of skin that hangs behind the penis. It holds and protects the testicles. It also provides a sort of climate control system.
Scrotum
Sperm form best at ___ degrees?
35 degrees
is the longer part of the uterus that expands during pregnancy.
Corpus
enclose and protect the other external reproductive organs. During puberty, hair grows here.
Labia majora
are small, oval-shaped glands that are located on either side of the uterus. They produce eggs and hormones.
Ovaries
The process of producing eggs.
Oogenesis
are narrow tubes that are attached to the upper part of the uterus that serve as pathway for the egg to travel from the ovaries to the uterus.
Fallopian Tubes
is a small sensitive protrusion that’s comparable to a penis in men.
Clitoris
is inside Labia majora and surrounds the opening to the vagina and urethra.
Labia minora
picks up the ovum from the ovary.
Fimbriae
Fertilization of an egg by sperm normally occurs in the
Fallopian Tubes
nourishes the embryo; sheds during menstruation.
Endometrium
is the opening to the urethra.
Urethral opening
allows menstrual blood and babies to exit the body.
Vaginal opening
is a piece of tissue covering or surrounding part of the vaginal opening.
Hymen
is a long, muscular tube that travels from the epididymis into the pelvic cavity, to just behind the bladder. It transports mature sperm to the urethra in preparation for ejaculation.
Van deferens
are formed by the fusion of the van deferens and seminal
Ejaculatory ducts
is the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. It has the additional function of expelling semen and when the penis is erect, the flow of urine is blocked from the urethra, allowing only semen to be ejaculated.
Urethra
are sac-like pouches that attach to the vas deferens near the base of the bladder. It makes a sugar-rich fluid (fructose) that provides sperm with a source of energy and helps with the sperm’s ability to move.
Seminal Vesicles
is a walnut-sized structure that’s located below the urinary bladder in front of the rectum. It contributes additional fluid to the ejaculate.
Prostate gland
are pea-sized structures located on the sides of the urethra, just below the prostate gland. These glands produce a clear slippery fluid that serves to lubricate the urethra and neutralize any acidity that may be present due to residual drops of urine in the urethra.
Bulbourethral glands/ Cowper’s gland
are oval organs about the size of very large olives that lie in the scrotum, secured at either end by a structure called spermatic cord. These are responsible for making testosterone and for producing sperm.
Testicles/ Testes
The process of creating sperm
Spermatogenesis
Within the testes are coiled masses of tubes called _____ which are responsible for producing sperm cells.
Seminiferous tubules
is a long, coiled tube that rests on the backside of each testicle. It carries and stores sperm cells that are created in the testes. It also brings the sperm to maturity.
Epididymis
