Nervous System Flashcards
It is a system of cells, tissues, and organs that regulates the body’s responses by transmitting signals from one part to another.
Nervous System
serves as the main processing center for the entire nervous system
Central Nervous System (CNS)
CNS consist of two main components namely?
Brain and Spinal Cord
This is an organ located within the skull that functions as organizer and distributor of information for the body
Brain
Three main parts of brain
Cerebrum
Cerebellum
Brain Stem
large, upper part of the brain that controls activity and thought
Cerebrum
the part under the cerebrum that controls the posture, balance and coordination
Cerebellum
the part that connects the brain to the spinal cord and controls automatic functions such as breathing, digestion, heart rate, and blood pressure
Brain Stem
This serves as a channel for signals between the brain and the rest of the body and controls simple musculoskeletal reflexes without input from the brain.
Spinal Cord
connects the central nervous system to the organs and limbs.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
this system is associated with the voluntary control of the body movements and has two main parts.
Somatic Nervous System
2 parts of Somatic nervous system
Spinal Nerves and Cranial Nerves
the nerves that carry motor and and sensory signals between the spinal cord and the body.
Spinal Nerves
the nerve fibers that carry information into and out of the brain stem.
Cranial Nerves
this system is associated with the involuntary control of body and has two subdivisions.
Autonomic Nervous System
the two subdivisions of the Autonomic Nervous System
Sympathetic and Parasympathetic
it is achieved when body is in a dynamic role or stress.
Sympathetic
it maintains body functions and restores the body to normal or relaxed mode.
Parasympathetic
the basic unit of the nervous system, has a cell body containing the nucleus, are cells with the special ability to carry signals or impulses.
Neurons
What are the parts of Neuron?
Nucleus
Cell Body
Dendrites
Axon
Nodes of Ranvier
Schwann Cells
Myelin Sheath
control center of the cell
Nucleus
spherical part of the neuron that contain the nucleus.
Cell Body
carry the impulses toward the cell body.
Dendrites
carry the impulses away from the cell body.
Axon
are gaps in the myelin sheath coating in the neutral axon
Nodes of Ranvier
an insulating layer, that form around the nerves and allows electrical impulses to transmit quickly and efficiently along the nerve cells
Myelin Sheath
support nerve regeneration
Schwann Cells
is a combination of electrical charge and a chemical reaction. It is not a flow of electricity, but an electrochemical signal moving along a neuron.
Nerve Impulse
What are the three types of Neurons?
Sensory Neuron
Interneuron
Motor Neuron
