Reproduction & Embryology Flashcards
Scrotum
a sac of loose skin & underlying subcutaneous tissue that contains the testes
Testes
paired, oval glands in the scrotum partially covered by tunica vaginalis
Seminiferous tubules: carry sperm produced within them (spermatogenesis) out of the testes
Sperm
designed to reach & penetrate the secondary oocyte in order to achieve fertilization & create a zygote; head contains 23 chromosomes; chromosome covers head & contains enzymes to help w/ penetration
Semen
mixture of sperm & seminal fluid
Epididymus
where sperm matures and propels sperm into ductus deferens; degenerated sperm are reabsorbed
Penis
contains urethra; passageway for semen & urine
Seminal vesicles (gland)
secrete an alkaline, viscous fluid containing fructose, prostaglandins & proteins
Prostate (gland)
gland that secretes milky, slightly acidic fluid containing citric acid, enzymes & acid phosphatase
Bulbourethral glands
secret an alkaline fluid during sexual arousal that neutralizes acids from urine
GnRH
stimulates cells in the pituitary to produce LH & FSH
LH
stimulates cells in testes to produce testosterone
FSH
stimulates spermatogenesis
Testosterone
prenatal development, male sexual characteristics, development of sexual function, & stimulation of anabolism
Inhibin
decreases rate of spermatogenesis in males
Ovaries
produce gametes & hormones
