reproduction; asexual reproduction Flashcards
asexual reproduction
creation of a new identical individual from a single organism
binary fission +organisms
parent cell divides so each new cell contains a complete set of DNA identical to the parent cell.
occurs in unicellular organisms that do not have a true nucleus
ex: bacteria
budding + organisms
bud grow s on parent organism before eventually breaking away after growing enough to form an independent organism.
occurs in invertebrate animals
ex: sponge, hydra, yeast
sporulation + organism
parent organism produces sporces which are stored in sporangium until they are mature and ready to be dispersed, sporces can grow into new individual through mitotic cell division
occurs in bread mold
ex: fungai
asexual advantages
beneficial for organisms that can’t move or live in isolation to produce offspring
beneficial for organisms that are genetically well-suited for a specific environment which helps them quickly expand and exploit available resources
asexual disadvantages
produces genetically uniform populations, however they only thrive in one environment and can die out the moment the environments has a single change:
changes in environment, illness, etc.
regeneration
organism divides in half and regenerates the parts its missing, new limbs can be grown this way
regeneration + organisms
organism divides in half + able to regenerate the parts its missing , new limbs can be grown as well.
occurs in invertebrates
ex: planarians, sea stars, flat worms
parthenogenesis + organisms
growth development occurs without fertilization
occurs in daphnia which under ideal circumstances of parthenogenesis
to reproduce rapidly.
