Reproduction Flashcards
Histogenesis
process of forming tissues; from the germ layers
Spermatogenesis
process of producing sperm
Oogenesis
process of producing an egg (ovum)
Organogenesis
process of forming organs from tissues
Zygote
fertilized ovum; union of sperm & egg; combining chromosomes (1st stage in development)
Morula
solid ball of cells after fertilization; cells dividing (2nd stage after zygote)
Blastocyst
hollow ball of cells that implants in uterus
1st trimester
heart starts to beat in the embryo
Ovulation
ovary releasing an egg
Insemination
depositing sperm in female birth canal
Parturition
another name for birth; fully developed and mature (5th stage of development)
Embryo
after zygote/cells dividing up to 8 weeks; (3rd stage in development)
Fetus
after 8 weeks, up to 40 weeks; (4th stage in development)
Infancy
beginning or early period of existence; up to 18 months (6th stage of development)
Child
period between infancy and adolescence (7th stage of development)
Adolescence
period of physical and psychological development from the onset of puberty to maturity (8th stage of development)
Sesenescence
older adulthood full maturity to death (9th stage of development)
2nd trimester
all organs are formed & functioning
3rd trimester
most growth occurs in this trimester; fetus can triple weight
Growth vs development
Growth is getting larger and development is changing the world
Pregnancy
A person having a child developing in the uterus
Process of fertilization
- Union of ovum and sperm.
- One sperm can enter the egg, but it takes hundred to to break through the outer layer of the ovum.
- 23 chromosomes of the ovum and the gg unite to form a full set
Embryo vs fetus
Embryo is the first 8 weeks. Fetus is month 3 to birth
Order of development and life
Ovum and sperm Zygote Morula Blastocyst Embryo Fetus Infancy Childhood Adolescent Sesence
