Reproduction Flashcards
What happens in sexual reproduction?
1) gamete from mother fuses with gamete from father.
2) mixes genetic information from each parent.
3) offspring have different combinations of genes, so show a variety of characteristics.
ADVANATAGE:
- there is variation.
DISADVANTAGE:
- has to find a mate.
What happens in asexual reproduction?
1) no fusion of gametes- only one parent.
2) no mixing of genetic information.
3) all offspring have same genes as parent and each other.
ADVANTAGES:
- is faster - one parent needed.
- offspring are genetically identical to each other and the parent.
DISADVANTAGE:
- no variation.
How does asexual reproduction produce genetically identical offspring?
This involves mitosis, which produces genetically identical cells.
