Reproduction Flashcards
How do asexual animals reproduce?
- Cells divide to make identical copies of themselves through a process called mitosis.
- Offspring is a genetic clone of parent. They have the same number of chromosomes.
What are the 3 types of asexual reproduction?
- fragmentation eg. starfish
- binary fission eg. amoeba
- budding eg. yeast
How does sexual reproduction work?
A sperm cell and an ovum (egg cell) join together to become one cell.
What are pros and cons of asexual reproduction?
Pros:
1. Fast reproduction rate
2. No mate needed - saves energy
Cons:
1. No genetic variation = no adaptation
2. Disease risk
3. Only suitable to one habitat
What are pros and cons of sexual reproduction?
Pros:
1. Increased genetic diversity. More ability to adapt and evolve.
2. Low disease risk.
Cons:
1. Slow reproductive rate
2. Fewer offspring
3. Energy to find mate
What is internal fertilisation?
The fusion of the male and female gametes inside the female body.
What is external fertilisation?
The fusion of the male and female gametes outside the female body.
What are the pros and cons of internal fertilisation?
Pros : Chances of survival of the offspring are increased.
Cons: Only a limited number of offspring can be produced.
What are the pros and cons of external fertilisation?
Pros: Chances of survival of the offspring are markedly reduced.
Cons: A LARGE NUMBER of eggs are produced.
What are some examples of organisms that do external fertilisation?
Fish, Frogs, Starfish
