Mitosis Flashcards
What is mitosis?
It is when one parent cell divides to form two identical daughter cells.
Why do cells do mitosis? (3 things)
- Growth: so an organism can increase in size.
- Repair: to replace or fix damaged body tissue.
- Development: so that the cells can differentiate and specialise to perform new functions.
What is the phase called that cells chromosomes start to replicate themselves?
Interphase. This phase is where the cell spends most of its time in.
What is the acronym for the phases of mitosis?
P M A T (remember: a puppy pee mat)
What happens in prophase?
The chromosomes are condensing in the nucleus which means they thicken and become visible.
What happens in metaphase?
Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell and the nucleus has been disassembled.
What happens in anaphase?
Chromosomes are pulled to opposite sides of the cell with the help of fibres called spindles.
What happens in telophase?
Chromosomes are at complete opposite ends. Two new nuclei are forming around the chromosomes. The cell then
splits by cytokinesis.
What is Cytokinesis?
The physical process of cell division, which divides the cytoplasm of a parental cell into two daughter cells.
