Meiosis Flashcards
1
Q
What is meiosis?
A
The process of cell division for gametes (egg and sperm cells).
2
Q
How many chromosomes do gametes have?
A
23 - they are haploid
3
Q
Are gametes genetically identical to each other?
A
No!! A process called ‘cross-over’ allows there to be genetic shuffling so no two gametes are the same.
4
Q
How many times does the gamete cell split in the process of meiosis?
A
Twice.
5
Q
If you start with one gamete cell, how many cell will you be left with by the end of meiosis?
A
4 daughter cells.
6
Q
Describe the meiosis process?
A
- DNA replication during Interphase.
- Chromosomes condense.
- Chromosomes line up at centre in pairs.
- Chromosomes split into two daughter cells.
- Chromosomes line up in a single file and sister chromatids separate in the second division.
- 4 genetically different, haploid gametes are produced.
7
Q
What happens as a result of meiosis?
A
- Genetic variation
- The creation of a zygote that will have 46 chromosomes.
