Cell Division + Chromosomes Flashcards
What is the difference between growth and development?
- Growth is the increase in size.
- Development is when cells differentiate into specialised cells.
Why do cells need to reproduce?
So an organism can grow and repair.
What are sperm and egg cells called? And what is the name of all the other cells?
- Gametes
- Somatic cells
What is the process of reproduction for somatic cells called?
Mitosis
What is a chromosome?
A long, linear strand of DNA
Where are the chromosomes located in the cell?
The nucleus.
How many chromosomes are there in a somatic cell?
23 pairs of chromosomes (totalling 46)
What happens to the chromosomes when a cell is dividing?
Chromosomes replicate and condense into a more compact form. Once replicated, it is known as a sister chromatid.
What is the bit that links a chromatid?
A centromere.
