Renewable Resources Flashcards
List 3 renewable energy resources
Wind
Solar
Geothermal
What makes a resource renewable?
Abundant
Replenishes itself
Inexhaustible
What resources are renewable to a curtain extent?
Fish
Lumber
How is geothermal energy collected
Water in underground reservoirs are heated by magma. This hot water is then turned into steam below ground or above ground by humans which spins a turbine producing energy.
Direct uses of geothermal energy
Hot springs for bathing
Central heating in houses
Pros of geothermal
Low emissions
Reliable all yr round
Waste can be sold or pumped back into the ground
Cons of geothermal energy
High initial costs
Produces some waste chemicals
Only available in areas with hot hydrothermal fluids below the ground/tectonic activity
Pros of solar
Zero carbon emissions
Contains no moving parts therefore can last decades
Commercial panels don’t take up any space (on rooftops)
Cons of solar
Panels stop working can contribute to landfill
Metals used to produce systems require mining and refining creating greenhouse gas emissions, soil water and air pollution.
Only produces power when there’s sunlight
Pros of wind energy
Zero carbon emissions
Cost effective
Cons of wind energy
Noise pollution impact local wildlife
Deforestation/ beeds lots of space
Unreliability of wind conditions
