Mining Rehabilitation Flashcards
Why would you chose an open cut mine
When ore deposits are close to the surface and a whole is cut to expose the ore body
Used for iron, coal, copper, zinc, lead, gold, nickel
When do we use underground mines
For ores situated deep underground
lead, coal, gold, copper, platinum, and iron ore
What is geosequestration
Capturing and long term storage of carbon dioxide within rocks and sediments.
1capture co2
2seperate it from other gases
3compress then transport
4inject into underground geological reservoirs

What is an EIA
Environmental impact assessment
an assessment of the impacts a mining project will have on the environment to consider if it’s feasible to proceed
What are some possible rehab conditions a mining company must agree to
Compacted surface of truck tracks need to be Broken up to promote regrowth
Drill holes must be capped to prevent small animals from falling and erosion
Trenches must be refilled
Sups constructed to contain saline ground water must be back filled.
tailings must be removed
What are some negative impacts of an open cut mine to humans
Noise pollution
Dust
Vibrations
Air blasts
Water contamination
Types of drilling and uses
Onshore - petroleum or natural gas (coal seam gas) (fracking)
Offshore - fixed platforms or ships for oil and natural gas
What does a mining company need to consider for a mine to be viable
value
volume
