A patient is commenced on haemodialysis for end-stage renal failure secondary to Type 2 diabetes mellitus. During their first session they begin to feel sick complaining of a headache. Thirty minutes later they start to vomit and become drowsy.
What syndrome is the above and what causes this?
A
Disequilibrium syndrome. Rapid changes in plasma osmolality and cerebral oedema.
