How much of cardiac output do kidneys get compared to their weight?
The receive 25% of CO but only account for 1% of body weight
What surrounds each kidney?
A capsule
What are nephrons?
The functional units of the kidneys
What are nephrons made up of?
Epithelium
How thick are the walls?
One cell thick
simple cuboidal epithelium
What are cells in the nephron specialised for?
Absorption and Secretion
How are adjacent cells in the nephron joined?
At tight junctions
What do some nephron cells have on their luminar surface?
Microvilli
brush border
What do tight junctions do?
The restrict diffusion between lumen and the extracellular space
What ions are secreted into the urine?
Hydrogen, Potassium and Ammonia
What are reabsorbed back into the blood?
Water, nutrients and ions
What are the structures of the nephron in order?
- Glomerulus
- Bowmans Capsule
- PCT
- Loop of Henle
- DCT
- Collecting Ducts
What do the fenestrations in the capillary wall allow?
The movement of substances
What occurs in the glomerulus?
Blood filtration
