Religious policies under Edward
Act of Uniformity passed in Jan 1549 - clergy could marry, communion in English, singing for souls of dead ended. New Prayer Book brought in 1549 - unrest. 1552 - Second prayer book and Act of Uniformity - removed all traces of Catholicism. England legally Protestant.
Support for policies under Edward
People still supported Catholicism despite changes - slowness of royal injunctions shows this with them not coming in til 17 months after first announced.
Opposition to policies under Edward (3 things)
Western rebellion -1549 - against new prayer book. Revels demanded masses in latin, prayers four souls of dead and images to be restored. Unrest also in Yorkshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire. Wills showed little support with only 8% of Kent Protestant.
Religious policies under Mary (5 things)
Oct 1553 - Act of Repeal undid changes made under Edward. Spring 1554 - royal injunctions restored traditional Catholic practices. Heresy laws - July 1554. Second Act of Repeal - Nov 1554 - repealed all religious legislation passed since 1529. Burnings in Feb 1555.
Support for Mary (2 things)
Mary’s return greeted with support - large numbers turned up to coronation. Parishioners such as in Morebath, Devon, raised sums of money to restore Catholic equipment.
Opposition to Mary’s policies (3 things)
Parliament opposition due to heresy laws, Aliens Act, Second Act of Repeal down to factional, economic and land concerns - in particular fear of losing monastic lands. 2) Wyatt’s rebellion due to religious changes. 3) Marian exiles - 1554 and after - 800 protestants left England
Catholic persecution ( 3 things)
300 Protestants burnt at stake - John Rogers first - Feb 1555. Oct 1555 - Latimer and Bishop Ridley burnt. Cramner March 1556. Most happened in South East where most Protestants were and closer to endangering capital.
