Social and economic problems such as rising prices, poor harvests and enclosure. Factional and political causes - power struggle due to Edward’s age and fear of loss of influence - Wyatt’s rebellion/ LJG affair. Religion - Western rebellion.

Social and economic developments (4 things)

A

Population rise - 1525-1551 - rose from 2.3 million to 3 million - food shortages. Enclosures. Price rise - up due to population increase, poor agricultural system and bad harvests - 1549 up by 114% compared to 1508. Poverty and vagrancy - increased poor - led to 1547 vagrancy act condemning vagrants to slavery.

Western Rebellion

A

1549 - Prayer book rebellion - demanded restoration to traditional doctrine and transubstantiation. Captured Exeter - but put down under Lord John Russell.

Kett Rebellion

A

1549 - due to enclosures. Kett raised 16,000 men and took Norwich. Duke of Northumberland put down rebellion. Rebels demanded - reform in religion, grievances to rising rents and enclosures.

The Lady Jane Grey Affair (3 things)

A

Political issues - Northumberland married son to LJG - May 1553 - to further his political career. Religious reasons - Edward and Northumberland protestant - fearful of Mary’s Catholicism. Threat to Mary - plot could have worked if Mary hadn’t escaped to East Anglia. Proclaimed herself queen and able to put down rebellion.

Wyatt’s rebellion (2 things)

A

Causes - fear of marriage and Spanish influence. Also Protestant causes - all members Protestant. Wyatt gathered force of 3,000 but put down.
