McGuire: 4 factors which influence whether or not religion can lead to social change

A
  1. Beliefs/practices- some have strong moral codes (Islam), others less concerned & more spiritual (Buddhism)
  2. Culture- some societies the beliefs are central to the culture (Latin America) or less so (Britain)
  3. Relationship to society- some central to cultural, political, economic life of society and so more influential (Church), other less influence (Yoga)
  4. Centralised authority- when it has led to social chage there was a charismatic leader to lead revolution e.g. Mandela, MLK Jr
