Not all religions are the same and not all societies are as susceptible to change as others

McGuire: 4 factors which influence whether or not religion can lead to social change
A
- Beliefs/practices- some have strong moral codes (Islam), others less concerned & more spiritual (Buddhism)
- Culture- some societies the beliefs are central to the culture (Latin America) or less so (Britain)
- Relationship to society- some central to cultural, political, economic life of society and so more influential (Church), other less influence (Yoga)
- Centralised authority- when it has led to social chage there was a charismatic leader to lead revolution e.g. Mandela, MLK Jr

Useful in evaluating other arguments which try to make generalisations about religion’s role in creating change by recognising a range of factors influence this
