Postmodernism Flashcards
Individuation
People are more focused on the self and less concerned with being part of a group
Rejection of metanarratives
Objective knowledge/overarching theories are replaced with uncertainty and plurality of beliefs
Globalisation
The world has become increasingly interconnected
Chosen identities
Our identities are made up of the choices we make rather than ascribed to us, giving us more freedom to create our identities
Loss of faith in science
Science and technology are losing influence e.g. causing issues such as global warming
Hervieu-Leger (2)
Decline in traditional religious institutions, individuals are ‘spiritual shoppers’ we choose elements of religion
Lyon (2)
Individuals have become consumers of religion due to globalisation, religion has become ‘disembedded’ from real life
Bauman (3)
Postmodernity has led to a ‘crisis of meaning’- no longer a stable sense of morality, people turn to religion to provide meaning and moral guidance in an uncertain world
