• many will have grown up with the idea that religion and politics don’t mix - In the UK this is deeply rooted in the Enlightenment
• Generally we understand the UK to be on a secular path - religion should have nothing to do with politics - we perhaps relate religious interference in politics as related to totalitarian or oppressive regimes
• a decline in people having confidence in church authority
