Reliabity & Validity Flashcards
Reliability
The extent to which results are consistent.if the same investigation is carried out with the same ppts at a different time and the same or similar results are found, results are highly reliable.
Validity
The extent to which results are true; Eco val is the extent to which results can be applied to the real world and experimental validity is whether the Rschr tested what they aimed to test.
Content validity
The questionnaire/test/interview questions are checked by a professional in that area to see if the test/questions is testing what it is supposed to, if so it can be said to be valid.
Concurrent validity
The questions/test and results gained are checked against an existing test and its results in the same area. If they are similar then the test you have used is valid
Construct validity
A means of assessing the validity or trueness of a psychological test by demonstrating the extent to which the performance on the test measures an identified underlying theoretical belief.
Confounding variable
A variable that is not the intended IV but has an effect on the DV
Ecological validity
A form of external validity concerning the ability to generalise a rsch effect beyond the particular setting in which it is demonstrated to other settings. Ecological validity is established by representativeness (mundane realism) and generalisability (to other settings)
External validity
The degree to which a rsch finding can be generalise to, for example, other settings (ecological validity), other people (population validity) or over time (historical validity).
External reliability
A calculation of the extent to which measure varies from another measure of the same thing over time. This can be assessed using test-retest method.
Extraneous variables
In an exp any variable other than the IV that may have an affect on the DV therefore confounding results
Face validity
A means of establishing validity by considering the extent to which the test or questionnaire looks as if it is measuring what it intends to measure.
Ppt variable
Characteristics of individual ppts such as age or intelligence that may interfere with results
