Experimental Design Flashcards
Independent groups
Rsch where ppts take part in one condition only so two or more groups are used for the different conditions
Independent groups strengths
Eliminates problem of order effects as ppts only take part in one condition
Independent group weakness
Individual differences between ppts could effect the results (Matched pairs)
Matched pairs
Rsch where ppts are matched for relevant characteristics e.g. Age, gender, IQ. Then each group does one test/condition.
Matched pairs strength
Eliminates problems with individual differences as ppts are matched on key characteristics
Matched pairs weaknesses
Difficult and time consuming requires reliable and valid procedures
Repeated measures
One group of ppts takes part in all conditions in the study. This group is the only group of ppts used in the rsch.
Repeated measures strengths
Bc same ppts take part in both tests/conditions there are no individual differences between ppts
Repeated measure weakness
Order effects occur due to practice, tiredness and/or boredom
Practice effects
Ppts having taken part in one condition may perform better in the second condition bc they know the task
Order effects
The ppts may become bored or tired during the second condition which affects rsch findings
Counter balancing
Groups of ppts is divided one group does condition A before condition B, while the other group does condition B before condition A
Individual differences/ppt variables
Characteristics of ppts which may influence the way they perform in a condition e.g. IQ
