Ren Shen Bai Du San (Ginseng Powder to Overcome Pathogenic Influences)
Ingredients and Dosages
Qiang huo 9g; du huo 9g; chuan xiong 9g; chai hu 9g; jie geng 9g; zhi ke 9g; fu ling 9g; qian hu 9g; gan cao 6g.
B. Functions
Dispels wind-cold -dampness, releases the exterior, and augments the qi.
C. Indications
Fever, severe chills with shivering, without sweating, pain and stiffness of the head and neck, soreness and aches of the extremities, nasal congestion with labored breathing, coughing with white phlegm, distention and fullness of the chest and epigastrium, fatigue, reduced appetite, a pale tongue, a greasy, white tongue coating, and a floating soggy pulse.
This formula mainly treats acute externally-contracted wind-cold-dampness with deficiency qi, including the aged people, post partum women, and those patients recovering from a debilitating illness.
D. Analysis
Chief herb: qiang huo and du hua.
Qiang huo and du hua dispel wind-cold-dampness from the exterior, and relieve pain.
Deputy herb: chuan xiong and chai hu
Chuan xiong dispel the wind-cold, release the exterior, moves the blood, and especially relieves the pain of the head and neck.
Chai hu releases pathogenic influences from the muscle layer.
Assistant herb: jie geng, zhi ke, qian hu, fu ling, ren shen, sheng jiang and bo he are the assistant herbs.
Jie geng ascendes qi, while zhi ke descends qi.
Qian hu expels phlegm, stops the coughing.
Fu ling strengthens the spleen, transforms phlegm.
Ren shen tonifies yuan qi, strengthens the normal qi to dispel pathogenic influences.
Sheng jiang and bo he dispel the pathogenic influences and release the exterior; Sheng jiang also warm spleen yang, treat both of the manifestation and root of this disorder.
Envoy herb: zhi gan cao
Jing Fang Bai Du San( Schizonepeta and Ledebouriella Powder to Overcome Pathogenic influences) Associated with Ren Shen Bai Du San
A. Ingredients and Dosages
Omit ren shen, sheng jiang, and bo he from Ren Shen Bai du San, add jing jie 9g, fang feng 9g to make Jin Fang Bai Du San.
B. Functions
Releases exterior, dispels wind-cold-dampness, and relieves pain.
C. Indications
This formula is very commonly used for severe externally-contracted wind-cold-dampness exterior.
Shen Su Yin( Ginseng and Perilla Leaf Dec.)
Associated formula of Ren Shen BAi Du San
Ingredients and Dosages
Ren shen, zi su ye, ge gen, ban xia, qian hu, and fu ling 6g for each one; mu xiang, zhi ke, jie geng, chen pi and zhi gan cao 4g for each one.
B. Functions
Augments the qi, releases the exterior, regulates the qi and transforms phlegm.
C. Indications
Fever and chills, without sweating, headache, nasal congestion, coughing with white sputum, a stifling sensation in the chest, fatigue, short of breathing, lazy to speak, a white coating, and a floating, weak pulse.
This formula is used for externally-contracted wind-cold with congested fluids in the interior in patients with the spleen and lung qi deficiency.
D. Analysis
Chief herb: zi su ye and ge gen
Zi su ye and ge gen may disperse wind cold, release the exterior and vent evil from the muscles.
Deputy herb: qiang hu, ban xia, jie geng, chen pi and zhi ke
Qiang hu, ban xia, and jie geng disseminate and descend the lung qi, transform phlegm and stop coughing.
Chen pi and zhi ke regulate the qi and open the chest.
Assistant herb: ren sheng, fu ling, and mu xiang
Ren sheng augments the normal qi to expel the evils.
Fu ling strengthens the spleen qi, leaches out dampness, and transforms phlegm.
Mu xiang moves the qi, revive the spleen, and regulates the middle Jiao.
Envoy herb: zhi gan cao
Zai Zao San (Renewal Powder)
Ingredients and Dosages
Huang qi 6g; ren shen, fu zi, gui zhi, qiang huo, xi xin, chuan xiong, fang feng, chao shao yao, wei sheng jiang 3g for each one; gan cao 1.5g; da zao 2 pieces.
B. Functions
Tonifies the yang, augment the qi, induces sweating, and releases the exterior.
C. Indications
Slight fever with strong chills, absence of sweating, headache, cold extremities, fatigue, with a constant desire to lie down, pallid complexion, weak voice, a pale tongue with a white coating, and a sink, forceless or a floating, forceless pulse.
This formula is very effective formula for treating externally-contracted wind cold with qi and yang deficiency.
D. Analysis
Chief herb: huang qi, ren sheng and fu zi
Huang qi, ren sheng and fu zi may tonify the yang and augment the qi to provide the energy to drive out pathogenic influence.
Deputy herb: gui zhi, xi xin, qiang huo, chuang xiong, and fang feng
Gui zhi, xi xin, qiang huo, chuang xiong, and fang feng may disperse wind and expel cold, release the exterior.
Assistant herb: shao yao, sheng jiang, and da zao
Shao yao, sheng jiang, and da zao can harmonize the ying and wei, warm the stomach and strengthen the spleen, and moderate the middle Jiao.
Envoy herb: gan cao
Cong Bai Qi Wei Yin (Scallion Dec. with Seven Ingredients)
Ingredients and Dosages
Cong bai 9-12g; ge gen 9-12g; dan dou chi 6-9g; sheng jiang 6-9g; mai men dong 9-12; sheng di huang 9-12g.
B. Functions
Nourishes the blood, and releases the exterior.
C. Indications
Patients have a long-term illness history, or significant blood loss history, fever, headache, slight chills, absence of sweating, pale complexion and tongue, and a weak, thin pulse.
This formula is used for an exterior wind cold disorder with simultaneous blood or yin deficiency due to a long-term illness or significant blood loss.
D. Analysis
Chief herb: cong bai, ge gen, dan dou chi and sheng jiang
Cong bai, ge gen, dan dou chi and sheng jiang to resolve the exterior.
Ge gen also may generate the fluids.
Deputy herb: sheng di huang and mai men dong
Sheng di huang and mai men dong may nourish the blood and yin.
Jia Jian Wei Rui Tang (Modified Polygonatum Odoratum Dec.)
Ingredients and Dosages
Yu zhu 6-9g; cong bai 6g; jie geng 3-6g; dan dou chi 9-12g; bo he 3-6g; bai wei 3g; zhi gan cao 3g; da zao 2 pieces.
B. Functions
Nourishes the yin, clears heat, induces sweating, and releases the exterior.
C. Indications
Fever and slight chills, little or no sweating, headache, dry throat, cough sputum which is difficult to expectorate, thirst, irritability, a dark-red tongue, and a rapid pulse.
This formula is used for externally-contracted wind-heat in a patient with yin deficiency.
D. Analysis
Chief herb: yu zhu
Yu zhu may nourish the yin, moisten dryness, clear heat, and generates the fluids.
Deputy herb: cong bai, jing jie and dan dou chi
Cong bai, jing jie and dan dou chi mildly release the exterior and dispel wind heat.
Assistant herb: bai wei and jie geng
Bai wei may clear heat without injuring the yin fluids, treating irritability and thirst.
Jie geng disseminates the lung qi to stop coughing and expel phlegm.
Envoy herb: gan cao and da zao
Gan cao and da zao may harmonize the Ying and Wei level, and the middle Jiao.
