Bai Hu Tang (White Tiger Dec.)
Ingredients and Dosages
Shi gao 30g; zhi mu 9g; zhi gan cao 3g; geng mi 9-15g.
B. Functions
Clears qi-level heat, drains stomach fire, generates fluids, and alleviate thirst.
C. Indications
High fever with profuse sweating and an aversion to heat, a red face, severe thirst and irritability, and a flooding, forceful or slippery, rapid pulse. May have headache, toothache, or bleeding of the gums and nose. Among of them, great (high) fever, great thirst, great (profuse) sweating and a great (flooding and big) pulse are known as “yang ming channel four greats”.
This formula is used to treat blazing heat in the yang ming channel stage of the six stages of disease, or the qi-level of the four levels of disease.
D. Analysis
Chief herb: shi gao
Shi gao may clear heat, drain fire, and eliminate irritability, is a primary herb for fever, thirst and irritability.
Deputy herb: zhi mu
Zhi mu helps shi gao clear heat from the lungs and stomach to relieve thirst, and irritability, moisten dryness, and nourish the yin.
Assistant and Envoy herb: zhi gan cao and geng mi
Zhi gan cao and geng mi can also prevent the extremely cold nature of the other ingredients from injuring the middle jiao.
E. Modifications
* Add xi niu jiao or shui niu jiao can treat the severe simultaneous qi and ying level heat;
* Add da huang, mang xiao can purge heat accumulation, soften hardness, and moisten dryness, treating fever, thirst, pain and swelling of the gums, headache, nosebleed and constipation, or delirious speech,
F. Cautions and Contraindications
* This formula is contraindicated in cases with fever due to spleen and stomach deficiency, manifest as fever, spontaneous sweating, extreme fatigue, aversion to wind, and a deficient, floating pulse.
Zhu Ye Shi Gao Tang (Lophatherus and Gypsyn Dec.)
Ingredients and Dosages
Dan zhu ye 9-15g; shi gao 30g; ren shen 6g; mai men dong 9g; ban xia 9g; zhi gan cao 6g; geng mi 12g-15g.
B. Functions
Clears heat, generates fluids, tonifies the qi, and harmonizes the stomach.
C. Indications
Lingering fever from a febrile disease with sweating, thirst, vomiting, irritability, severe dry mouth, lips and throat, a choking cough, stifling sensation in the chest, or generalized weakness, a red tongue with little coating, and a deficient, rapid pulse. Some patients may be restlessness, insomnia. Lingering of the pathogenic influence in the qi level is a very common problem for a febrile disease.
This formula is very useful in treating this type of condition. Additional, summer heat injures the qi and fluids, and may lead to a condition characterized by high fever, profuse sweating, extreme fatigue, severe thirst, a red and dry tongue, and a rapid pulse, or deficient or thin.
D. Analysis
Chief herb: dan zhu ye and shi gao
Both of them work together to clear yang ming heat, generate the fluids, eliminate irritability, and relieve thirst.
Deputy herb: ren shen and mai men dong
Ren shen tonifies the qi ; mai men dong generate fluids.
Assistant herb: ban xia
Ban xia directs rebellious qi downward and stops the vomiting.
Envoy herb: zhi gan cao and geng mi
They help ren shen tonify the qi, harmonize the middle jiao and nourish the stomach, thereby protecting the stomach against injure from shi gao.
Zhi Zi Dou Chi Tang (Gardenia and Prepared Soybean Dec.)
A. Ingredients and Dosages
Zhi zi 9g; dan dou chi 9g.
B. Functions
Clears heat and alleviates restlessness and irritability.
C. Indications
Fever, irritability insomnia with tossing and turning before full sleep and very restless sleep, a stifling sensation in the chest with soft epigastrium, a slightly yellow tongue coating, and a slightly rapid pulse, or a strong, floating pulse at the distal position.
This formula is used for heat accumulation in the chest and epigastrium, which due to the heat constrained in the qi-level or qi –level heat linger in the superficial aspect of the yang ming stage( the muscles and chest).
D. Analysis
Chief herb: zhi zi
Zhi zi is a bitter, cold herb that clears heat and alleviates irritability.
Deputy herb: dan dou chi
Dan dou chi mainly spreads and drains the unformed, constrained heat in the chest.
