Cong Chi Tang (Scallion and Prepared Soybean Decoction)

A

Ingredients and Dosages

Cong bai 3-5 bulbs or 9-12g; dan dou chi 12-30g.

B. Functions

Unblocks the yang qi in the exterior and promotes sweating.

C. Indications

Mild fever and slight chills without sweating, stuffy nose, headache, a thin, white tongue coating, and a floating pulse.

This formula is used in treating the early stage of wind-cold exterior.

D. Analysis

Cong bai is a warm, acrid herb; it may unblock the flow of yang qi in the exterior and promote sweating.

Dan dou chi is a bitter, acrid herb; it may release the exterior disorders as well as interior constraint.

Jiu Wei Qiang Huo Tang (Nine Herbs Dec. with Notopterygium)

Ingredients and Dosages

Qiang huo 6g; fang feng 6g; cang zhu 6g; xi xin 2g; chuan xiong 3g; bai zhi 3g; huang qin 3g; sheng di huang 3g; gan cao 3g.

B. Functions

Releases exterior and disperses wind-cold-dampness, clears interior heat, moves the yang qi and relieves pain.

C. Indications

Fever and chills without sweating, generalized body aches and pains, headache, stiff neck, a bitter taste in the mouth, slight thirst, a white or slight yellow tongue coating, and a floating pulse.

This formula is useful for externally-contracted wind-cold-dampness with concurrent internal accumulation of heat.

D. Analysis

Chief herb: qiang huo

Qiang huo is the important and principal herb in dispersing exterior wind-cold-dampness.

Deputy herb: There are some the deputy herbs in the formula.

a. Fang feng and cang zhu help the chief herb release he exterior wind-cold by inducing sweating, eliminate dampness, especially fang feng is a very important dispersing wind herb.
b. Xi xin, chuan xiong, and bai zhi disperse wind cold, unblock the flow of yang qi in the channels, and treat the headache and body aches.

Assistant herb: sheng di huang and huang qin

Sheng di huang and huang qin clear accumulating interior heat, treat thirst and a bitter taste in the mouth.

Envoy herb: gan cao

Gan cao harmonizes the middle jiao and the function of the other herbs.

Chuan Xiong Cha Tiao San Tang (Ligusticum Chuaanxiong Powder to be taken with Green Tea)

Ingredients and dosages

Bo he 12g; chuan xiong 12g; bai zhi 6g; qiang huo 6g; xi xin 3g; jing jie 6g; fang feng 6g; gan cao 6g.

B. Functions

Disperses wind and relieves pain.

C. Indications

Headache in any parts of the head accompanied by fever, chills, nasal congestion, or dizziness, a thin, white tongue coating, a floating pulse.

This formula mainly treats externally-contracted wind-cold. But the most important indications are: headache, nasal congestion, a floating pulse.

D. Analysis

Chief herbs: chuan xiong and bo he

Bo he also benefits the head and eyes, and clears heat.

Chuan xiong also moves the blood circulation to alleviate headache.

Deputy herbs: qiang huo, bai zhi, and xi xin all disperse wind and relieve headache.

Qiang huo especially effective in treating headache in the occipital where belong tai yang channels.

Bai zhi treating headache in the frontal where belong yang ming channels.

Xi xin treating headache in the orbital where belong shao yin channels.

Assistant herb:

Fang feng and jing jie are used for expelling wind.

Envoy herb:

Gan cao harmonizes the other ingredients.

Ju Hua Chao Tiao San

* For wind heat headache, omit qiang huo, xi xin, add ju hua, jiang can, chan tui, which is named Ju Hua Cha Tiao San. It is for headache and dizziness primarily due to wind heat.

Cang Er Zi San (Xanthium Powder)

Ingredients and Dosages

Cang er zi 6-9g; xin yi hua 3-6g; bai zhi 6-9g; bo he 3-6g.

B. Functions

Disperses wind, relieves pain, and unblocks the nose.

C. Indications

Copious, purulent and foul-smelling nasal discharge, nasal obstruction, sneeze, dizziness, frontal headache, red tongue, a normal or yellow tongue coating, a floating pulse.

This formula is often used for treating profuse nasal discharge that is caused by wind-heat attacking the head.

D. Analysis

Chief herbs: cang er zi and xin yi hua

Cang er zi and xin yi hua can unblock the nasal passage, and are specifically effective in treating profuse and purulent nasal discharge.

Deputy herbs: bai zhi and bo he

Bai zhi releases the exterior, disperses wind-heat, opens up the orifices, and promotes the discharge of pus.

Bo he disperses wind-heat releases the exterior, clears the head and eyes.

Ingredients and Dosages

Xiang ru 9-12g; bai bian dou 6-9g; hou po 6-9g.

B. Functions

Releases the exterior, scatters cold, transforms dampness, and harmonizes the middle Jiao.

C. Indications

Aversion to cold with skin that is warm to touch, an absence of sweating, a sensation of heaviness in the head, headache, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, a stifling sensation in the chest, fatigued extremities, a white, greasy tongue coating, and a floating pulse.

This formula is used for treating damp cold contracted during summertime, which is an exterior-interior condition.

Xin Jia Xiang Ru Yin (Newly-Augmented Elsholtzia Decocotion)

Ingredients and Dosages

On the base of Xiang Ru San, add jin yin hua 9g and lian qiao 6g.

B. Functions

Releases the exterior summerheat conditions.

C. Indications

This formula may be used for summerheat ( yin shu) manifests as severe, early-stage summerheat with superimposed contraction of wind cold and dampness stagnate in the interior characterized by fever, and chills without sweating, headache, thirst, flushed face, a sense of tightness in the chest, a white, greasy tongue coating, and a floating, rapid pulse.

D. Analysis

This condition is summerheat, patients have thirst, and flushed face, so use jin yin hua and lian qiao to clear heat and relieve toxin.

Xiang Su San (Cyperus and Perilla Leaf Powder)

Zi su ye 6-9g; xiang fu 6-9g; chen pi 3-6g; zhi gan cao 3-6g.

B. Functions

Regulates the qi and releases the exterior.

C. Indications

In this case, patients usually are the constitutional qi stagnation, and then they are affected by externally-contracted wind-cold. So patients have both indications of externally-contracted wind-cold and qi stagnation at the same time.

D. Analysis

Chief herb: zi su ye

Zi su has two functions releases the exterior wind cold, induces sweating; and moves the flow of the qi in the interior.

Deputy herb: xiang fu

Xiang fu mainly releases constraint and disperses stagnation.

Assistant herb: chen pi

Chen pi helps the deputy herb regulate the qi.

Envoy herb: zhi gan cao
