Ingredients and Dosages

Fang feng, ma huang, jiu da huang, chuan xiong, dang gui, shao yao, bo he, lian qiao, mang xiao 6g for each one; shi gao, huang qin, jie geng 12g for each one; gan cao, jing jie, bai zhu, and zhi zi 3g for each one.

B. functions

C. Indications

This formula is used for wind-cold with heat accumulates internal, and both of the exterior and interior are excess heat.

D. Analysis

Chief herb: ma huang, jing jie, fang feng and bo he

Ma huang, jing jie, fang feng and bo he may disperse wind and release the exterior by inducing sweating.

Deputy herb: jiu da huang, mang xiao, hua shi and zhi zi, and shi gao, huang qin, lian qiao, and jie geng

Da huang and mang xiao drain fire and relieve toxicity, they are a powerful combination, expel heat through the stools.

Hua shi and zhi zi drain heat through the urine.

Shi gao, huang qin, lian qiao, and jie geng drain fire, clear heat, and relieve toxicity from the lung and stomach.

Assistant herb: chuan xiong, dang gui, bai shao, bai zhu, and gan cao

Chuan xiong, dang gui and bai shao nourish the blood and regulate the blood.

Bai zhu and gan cao augment the qi and harmonize the middle Jiao.

Envoy herb: gan cao

Gan cao can harmonize the functions of other herbs.

Ge Gen Huang Qin Huang Lian Tang (Kudzu, Coptis, and Scutellaria)

Ingredients and Dosages

Ge gen 15g; huang qin 6g; huang lian 9g; zhi gan cao 6g.

B. Functions

Releases the exterior and clears heat.

C. Indications

Fever, sweating, thirst, dysenteric diarrhea characterized by especially foul-smelling stools and a burning sensation around the anus, a sensation of irritability and heat in the chest and epigastrium, possible wheezing, a red tongue with yellow coating and a rapid pulse.

This formula treats both of the interior and exterior, but its primary focus is on clearing interior heat.

D. Analysis

Chief herb: ge gen

Ge gen releases the exterior, clears heat, and treats dysenteric diarrhea by raising the clear yang of the spleen and stomach.

Deputy herb: huang lian

Huang lian clears heat, dries dampness, relieves toxicity, stops the diarrhea and harmonizes the stomach.

Assistant herb: huang qin

Huang qin is useful for clearing heat from the lung, dries dampness, and helps the chief herb to stop the diarrhea.

Envoy herb: zhi gan cao

E. Modifications

* For high fever and stools containing blood or pus, add bai tou weng, qin pi and pu gong ying.

* For abdominal pain, tenesmus, add mu xiang and bai shao.

Yue Bi Tang (Maidservant from Yue Dec.)

Ingredients and Dosages

Ma huang 9g; shi gao 18g; sheng jiang 9g; gan cao 5g; da zao 5 pieces.

B. Functions

Induces sweating, disseminates the lung qi, and moves water.

C. Indications

Edema begins from the face, then quickly develops to the generalized body, accompanied by fever, chills, sore and heavy in the extremities, reduce urination, may be coughing and wheezing, and a floating pulse.

This formula is used for wind water which is caused by pathogenic wind invasion to the exterior, resulting the Lung can not disseminate and descend, lead to water pathway is not regulation, water can not transport into the bladder.

D. Analysis

Chief herb: ma huang

Ma huang disseminates and scatters the lung qi, induces sweating, and releases the exterior; it is very effective in moving water in the external.

Deputy herb: shi gao

Shi gao clears heat and releases the interstices and muscles.

Assistant herb: sheng jiang, gan cao and da zao

sheng jiang, gan cao and da zao may strengthen the spleen, transform dampness.

Envoy herb: gan cao
