A
- “Aunt Julia”, “Visiting Hour” and “Basking Shark” by Norman MacCaig relationships between the characters.
- In “Aunt Julia” the close relationship between the speaker, MacCaig, and his aunt is explored despite the language barrier between the pair. This close relationship makes her eventual death at the end of the poem all the more heartbreaking.
- In “Visiting Hour” the relationship between the patient and the speaker visiting her, the characters are isolated from one another due to the immense suffering the patient is in, this conveys the idea of the loneliness of death and illness.
- In “Basking Shark” the relationship between the speaker and the shark is explored, conveying the idea of who is the more evolutionary advanced creature.
