Simile
Compares two unlike things using like or as.
Metaphor
Compares two unlike things saying one this is another.
Personification
Comparison of an inanimate object to a human - giving it human qualities.
Hyperbole
An exaggeration for effect.
Ambiguity
Where there are multiple interpretations possible.
Rhythm
Recurrence of stresses and pauses in al line.
Beats in a line, often of poetry.
Rhyme scheme
A pattern of rhyme identified by using letter at ends of lines when rhyme deviates from an established patter.
Paradox
Two seemingly contradictory statements and yet, at a deeper level, they are true.
Oxymoron
A phrase containing two contradictory ter,s.
Techniques of sound
Alliteration - two words side by side that have similar sounds at the start.
Onomatopoeia - words describing words they sound like.
Sibilance - two words side by side with s sounds at the start
Caesura
Deliberate pause in the middle in a line of poetry.
Enjambement.
The running on of the thought from one line, couplet or stanza to the next without a syntactical break.
Euphony
Pleasant sounds - pleasing to the ear. Positive
