Which churches believe marriage should take place between a man and a woman?
- Anglican, Catholic and Methodist church
- they exclude same sex marriages in their church
What do Christians believe about staying within a marriage?
-they believe the promises are for life and that they should not be broken

What is God’s role in marriage?
- the vows are between the couple and God as well
- His blessing is asked for through prayer and His presence in the marriage relationship is believed to make it stronger
- marriage is believed to be put in place by God

- they teach that through marriage, a couple learn to love each other
- they say that marriage is a commitment to ‘love and grow’
- a Christian marriage should reflect Christ’s love for the church just like how the couple love each other
- relationships are developed from it and love is extended

- teaches that is creates a unique and unbreakable bond
- believe the couples commitment to each other reflect Christ’s love and commitment to his people
- God’s grace to the couple helps them to be good parents
- believe they place each other in God’s care
- marriage is permanent
- Pope Francis teaches that it is the presence of God’s love which ensures harmony between the couple
What is required for marriage in the Catholic church?
-the couple must be baptised for the marriage to be considered sacramental

What are the differences between marriage and civil partnership?
- marriage requires vows, civil partner ship is a signing of a document
- marriage can end in divorce whereas civil partnership dissolution

- against and do not perform them
- teach that marriage is the proper place for sexual relationships, the main role of sex being to create new life
- performing a civil partnership would suggest that homosexual sex is as acceptable as married heterosexual sex, which is against their teaching
Define celibate
-abstaining from marriage and sexual relations

-some think it should be acceptable since they provide companionship, unity and stability in the same way heterosexual marriage does

- they are concerned it will affect society and undermine the value of heterosexual marriage
Define cohabitation.
-when a couple live together without being married

-believe sex should only happen within marriage
however in society, many Christians accept that couples may live together and have sex as part of a committed relationship
-all Christians believe casual sex is wrong as it takes place outside a loving relationship

- believe God gave the gift of sex in order to reproduce
- sex outside marriage is considered wrong

- however the 1995 report ‘something to celebrate’ said that cohabitation and a sexual relationship is a step towards marriage
Why do some Christians choose to be celibate.
- so that they can fully focus on serving God
- Paul, the apostle, encouraged his followers to be celibate however said they should get married if they wanted sex
- in the Catholic church, priests are required to be celibate.
- nuns and monks are further examples

- use of artificial contraception is sinful as God said sex was for reproduction
- natural contraception is accepted
- said condoms should never be used

- believe marriage is permanent and that it cannot be broken by humans
- teaches that is does not break the holy agreement with God
- give advice and support despite not agreeing with it
- teaches that they may separate however should work on trying to restore the relationship
- they do annul marriages
What is as annul marriage?
-the promises agreed during marriage were not valid therefore neither is the marriage

- couples should work hard to keep their vow of a lifelong commitment
- does recognise that it may be impossible (in the case of adultery or abuse)
- if divorce occurs, the church prioritise care for the couple

- some Christians interpret the bible to mean that women are men’s helpers and that men are the leaders in marriage
- some believe women are weaker as Eve gave into the temptation to eat the apple
- see the women’s role as being in the home, caring for children
- mans role = wage earner
- both roles seen as equal however they are unique to the gender
Should man and woman be equal?
- pope John Paul’s speech- “God gives man and woman an equal personal dignity”
- catholic church value the role of the woman in the home more than any other career
- many Christians believe men should be as involved in the family as women
- Jesus speaks with a Samaritan women at the well

- believe that men and women were designed differently by God and therefore have different roles
- do not allow women to be priests or bishops
- Jesus chose his men to be disciples
- priests represent Jesus
- authority of church has been passed down through men and this tradition cannot be broken

- Godparents and members of the church bring the child up within Christian faith

- likely to attend Sunday school
