Why is jesus referred to as messiah?
- ‘annointed one’
- kings were annointed w oil to show they had been chosen by God, to they are referring to hum as lord/king
Why is jesus referred to as saviour?
- restored the broken relationship between God and humanity
- his death payed for human sin
- death and resurrection was to bring forgiveness from God
- christians believe jesus made it possible for them to spend eternity in heaven
What was the role of Jesus’ example?
- spent time with those society rejected
- showed God values all people + a relationship with him is possible for everyone
What did Jesus say was the greatest commandment?
-‘love the lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind’
What do Jesus’ teachings centre around?
-sacrificial love/ agape love
What is agape?
-sacrificial love that voluntarily suffers discomfort or even death for the benefit of other people without expecting anything in return
Different beliefs of liberal + conservative christians.
- liberal, do not take biblical accounts literal and that they are stories
- conservative, God is onmipotent= can do anything
What does Jesus teach about the law?
- obediance to the law must come from a persons heart
- challenges Moses’ commandment, ‘love your neighbour’ and says to also ‘love your enemies’
What does Jesus teach in true discipleship?
- requires true disciples to be sincere in all they do, keeping their fasting and charity private so they are doing it to please God
- prayers should be straight to the point as complicated ones does not make a person more spiritual
What does Jesus teach in true rightousness?
- take seriously their commitment to the faith
- true riches are spiritual ‘treasures’ which cannot be destroyed by moths or stolen
- a person cannot worship God and money
- no person is in position to judge anyone else as no one is perfect
- if one judges, God will use the same standards to judge them
What does Jesus teach in the narrow gateway?
- broad + wide path, broad leads to destruction=life is lived without any attention to the laws of God
- narrow pathway is difficult for the time the believer lives on earth but will lead to rewards in heaven
What does Jesus teach in building on solid foundations?
- a life built on faith and trust in God will enable a person to get through the toughest times in life
- house built on rock=faith in God
