What is worship?
-a word used by religious people to describe how they feel and act towards God
What do people show in worship?
-adoration, love, honour and respect for God
What is congregation?
-a group of Christians meeting for worship
Give an example of communal worship.
-Sunday worship
What is Liturgical worship?
- churches that are more formal in organisation than others and set patterns for their services
- they do and say the same things every service
Which churches use Liturgical worship?
-Roman catholic, orthodox, Church of England
What do the Liturgical churches do in different seasons?
-they have distinctive music, specific readings and prayers + rituals
What do the different colours of the robes reflect in Liturgical worship?
- helps express the character of what it is being celebrated or remembered
- e.g white and gold used for special celebrations, red used for recalling the suffering and death of Jesus
What 2 main types of service are in Liturgical worship?
-Eucharistic service and the service of the world
What is the Eucharist service?
-the celebration or remembrance of Jesus
What happens during the Eucharist service?
-congregation receives bread and wine + readings from bible and a short sermon
What is the service of the world?
-focuses on bible readings and the sermon
What is the sermon?
-a talk given by the person leading the service
What do Anglican services use in worship?
-the book of common prayer
Describe the order of the Liturgy of the world.
-gathering, bible readings, Nicene creed readings, prayers of intercession and confession, The peace,
Describe the order of the liturgy of the sacrament.
- preparation of the table (bread and wine)
- the eucharistic prayer
- the breaking of the bread
- receiving communion
Where is the Roman Catholic’s order of service written?
-the missal
What do Catholic’s believe about the bread and wine?
-transubstantiation, (the transformation of the bread and wine into the body of and blood of Christ)
What do Roman Catholics and Anglicans believe about Jesus’ death in their service?
- Roman Catholics=Jesus’ sacrifice is recreated at the alter
- Anglicans=Jesus’ death is never to be repeated
What happens in a Quaker meeting?
- people sit in silence and reflect, think and listen
- people may choose to be out loud which is called the ministry
What happens in Greek Orthodox worship?
- Gospels is carried into the sanctuary and bread and wine is carried to the alter
- first section of service=Liturgy of the world
- followed by Liturgy of the faithful
What do Orthodox churches emphasise in their worship and what does it do?
- the holy spirit
- called upon to change bread and wine into body and blood of Christ
What are non-Liturgical services?
-have little pre-organised structure
What do Charismatic Christians believe about worship?
-that they can receive similar gifts of the spirit e.g speaking in tongues
Where is Charismatic worship found?
-Pentecostal churches
What is a sacrament?
-a ritual through which the Grace of God can be received
What are the 7 sacraments the Roman Catholic church believes you need to have?
-Baptism, Eucharist, confirmation, reconciliation, marriage, holy orders, anointing of the sick
What 2 sacraments do protestant churches and church of England believe you need to have?
- baptism
- the eucharist
What do Anglicans believe about the bread and wine in the eucharist?
-that Jesus is spiritually present (consubstantiation)
Why is the eucharist important?
-it reminds Christians of the sacrifice of Jesus and the salvation they have received
What does the water symbolise in baptism?
-purification and being clear of sin
What do the Pentecostal churches believe about baptism?
-that they need to be a believer first
What do Roman Catholics believe baptism does?
-wash away original sin
Which denomination does not perform baptisms and why?
- Quakers
- they feel they receive God’s grace inwardly and there is no need for an outward ceremony
