What are the three theories of why groups develop?
Classic, Social Exchange, Social Identity
What is the Classic Theory?
- groups develop based on activities, interaction, sentiments
- common interests= increased interaction and attitudes (positive and negative) towards each other
What is the Social Exchange Theory?
- implicit expectation of mutual beneficial exchanges based on trust and obligation
- perception that group relationship will be positive and worth being apart of
What is the Social Identity Theory?
- based on membership in groups (self esteem)
- demographically based, culturally, organizationally
- motivated to belong and contribute/ sense of self worth and belonging

- Forming 2. Storming 3. Norming 4. Performing 5. Adjourning
What happens in the Forming stage of T-Man theory?
Guidance and direction, unclear purpose

Conflict, increased purpose, power struggles

Agreement, roles, facilitation

Goal delegation, clear purpose

Task complete, recognition

Informal and Formal
What are the characteristics of an informal group?
Occur naturally based on interests/shared values
ex. interest, friendship, reference
What are the characteristics of a formal group?
organizationally based and formed to achieve specific goals
ex. command, task and functional groups
