Communication
Pre-existing conditions influence the intended message and the way it is interpreted. Pre-existing conditions include
Values, attitudes, and beliefs. Culture and religion. Social status. Gender. Age or developmental level. And environment in which the transaction takes place
Nonverbal communication is composed of the following
Physical appearance and dress. Body movements and posture. Touch. Facial expressions. I behavior. Vocal clues or paralanguage period
Type of touch that is interpersonal and business like. It is used to accomplish a task
Functional professional touch
Type of touch that conveys an affirmation or acceptance of the other person
Social polite touch example a handshake
Touch at this level indicates a strong liking to the other person a feeling that he or she is a friend
Friendship warmth example is laying one’s hand on the shoulder of another
This type of touch conveys an emotional attachment or attraction to another person
Love intimacy touch. Example engaging in a strong mutual embrace
Touch at this level is an expression of physical attraction only
Sexual arousal. Example caressing or touching other with intent to create sexual arousal
Vocal component of the spoken word. Consist of pitch, tone, and loudness of spoken message, the rate of speaking, expressively place pauses, and emphasis assigned to certain words
Paralanguage
To be attentive and to really desire to hear and understand what the patient is saying both verbally and nonverbally
Active listening
What does acronym s o l e r stand for
S, sits squarely facing the patient. O, observe an open posture L, lean forward toward the patient. E, established eye contact. R, relax weather sitting or standing during the interaction.
