Relationship Breakdown: Evaluate Flashcards
Fails to reflect the possibility of personal growth:
Duck (2005)
Tashiro and Frazier (2003)
argues that the model fails to reflect the possibility of relational growth after breakdown
he introduced a final phase: ‘Resurrection Processes’
this is an opportunity to move beyond the distress associated with breakup and engage in personal growth
T&F: surveyed undergraduates who were experiencing break up and found that they claimed to experience distress as well as personal growth
The impact of the social phase varies by type of relationship:
Duck (2005)
suggests that the impact depends on the type of relationship; teenagers and young adults are seems as more unstable than LT adult relationships. Thus individual receive individuals sympathy but no real attempt at reconciliation
older people have lower expectations of a replacement partner and so breakup is more significant and thus the social phase consists of a greater attempt at reconciliation
Benefits of grave-dressing phase:
Monroe et al. (1999)
it deals with the after effects of breakdown
M: she found that students who experienced breakup had a greater I don’t know of developing a depressive disorder
T&F: found that individuals are able to feel better bout a breakup if they focus on the situation rather than their own flaws as being responsible for the breakup
Real-World application: implications for intervention
Ducks model stresses the importance of communication in breakdown
paying attention why they say and how they all offers an insight into how they feel about the relationship
if in the INTRAPSYCHIC phase, repair might involve reestablishing liking for the partner by viewing their behaviour more positively
