Evolutionary Explanations For Partner References: Outline Flashcards
The Nature of Sexual Selection;
this term explains the evolution of characteristics
these characteristics cause a reproductive advantage rather than a survival advantage
Intrasexual Selection:
individuals of one sex must outcompete other members of the same sex in order to gain access to the other sex
those who are successful, mate and pass on their genes and losers don’t
whatever characteristic that caused the success becomes more common in the gene pool
Intersexual Selection:
members of one sex evolve preferences for desirable qualities in potential mates
those of the opposite sex who possess these characteristics (e.g. resources) then gain a Mating Advantage over those who don’t
Sexual Selection and Long-Term Mate Preferences:
random mating isn’t logical as it pays to be choosy
the genetic quality of a mate will determine half the genetic quality of their offspring
Buss (2003) for females: being attracted to males with resources, being able to protect etc
for males: attracted to females who display signals of fertility and reproductive value
