What is counter urbanisation?
The movement away from large urban settlements to either smaller urban settlements or rural settlements
Why do people move to rural settlements?
Safer, pleasant environment
Retired people (don’t need to be in city)
Self-employed people
What is a suburbanised village?
A small settlement in which most of the workers commute to work, and are said to have ‘urban values’ and so they are not primarily interested in the rural economy
How does housing differ in original villages to suburbanised villages?
Original village: stone detached houses. Some farms, most over 100 years old, Barns
Suburbanised: new. Has semi-detached. Renovated barns or cottages. Expensive. Garages
How does transport differ in original villages to suburbanised villages?
Original village: bus service, some cars, narrow winding roads
Suburbanised: most families have one or two cars, better roads
How does society differ in original villages to suburbanised villages?
Original village: small, close knit community
Suburbanised: local community swamped. Village may be deserted during the day
How does the environment differ in original villages to suburbanised villages?
Original village: quiet, relatively pollution free
Suburbanised: more noise and risk of pollution. Loss of farmland and open space

The process whereby places and social characteristics become more similar yo each other so they eventually become indistinguishable
