What does it mean to perceive?
To consider/view/regard
What is an insider?
The perspective of someone who knows a place well and is familiar with not only its topography but also its daily rhythms and events
What is an outsider?
The perspective of someone who does not know a place well or someone who is marginalised in a community, such as a homeless person
What is freehold?
A type of tenure (ownership) in which the owner has outright ownership of the property and the land on which it stands
What is private space?
A space that is privately owned and public access may be prevented or limited
What is public space?
Space that is open and accessible to the public
What is topophilia?
A strong sense of place or love of a particular place
What is topophobia?
A fear or dread of certain places (e.g. Auschwitz)
What is a media place?
The places we have experienced through media such as literature, art, or film
What is Occupy London?
An anti-capitalist protest in London 2012.
They camped outside the St Paul’s Cathedral. The protest was in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street
What happened to the protesters of Occupy London 2012?
Protesters were evicted in February 2013, with 20 arrests being made. They moved to the Salvation Army, but police moved them on
What does endogenous mean?
Factors within a place that help shape its character.
E.g. location and topography
What does exogenous mean?
Factors from outside a place that force a change in a place’s character (e.g. its relationship with other places)
What is gesellschaft?
Extreme urban. The ever-changing nature of large, cosmopolitan commercial cities
What is gemeinschaft?
Extreme rural. A peasant society that is inward looking, an idyllic community, based on kinship and support by subsistence farming
