What is a geoglyph?
Large motifs or designs carved into rocks or drawn on the ground
What is ‘sense of place’?
The feelings of attachment we have to certain places
What is a firstspace perspective?
The quantitative analysis of a place (e.g. demographic data and socioeconomic data)
What is a secondspace perspective?
Qualitative data for how people feel about a place
What is a thirdspace reading?
A combination of both quantitative and qualitative data for a place
What is hyper reality?
A condition where what is real and what is fiction is blurred so that no clear distinction between the two can be made
What is rebranding?
A form of marketing in which new development or redevelopment uses a new name, symbol, design etc with the intention of developing a new identity in the mind of consumers. E.g. Birmingham
What is regeneration?
A form of renewal and redevelopment of a run-down area; regeneration aime to improve the area and the quality of life experienced by those living there
Why are places manipulated socially?
To change negative stereotypes
To encourage people to move, live and work in an area
What are places manipulated economically?
To attract inward investment
To improve job opportunities
Why are places manipulated environmentally?
To improve the quality of the built environment by removing derelict buildings, wasteland and so on
Why are places manipulated politically?
To raise the status of a place, which can give it political gain
To rebrand, make more attractive, possibly attract inward investment, and to improve the environment for those living in the area
What is social cleansing?
The removal from the area if members of a social class considered ‘undesireable’
What are some negative impacts of regeneration?
Relocation, polarisation, privatisation and fragmentation
What is gentrification?
When the status of an inner urban area which has become unfashionable and neglected is upgraded and status is improved. (E.g. London docklands)
