The Breton Crisis
France was keen to take Brittany, which was a threat as it would put all of the Channel coast in French hands. Henry agreed to send 6,000 soldiers to aid Brittany, but Maximilian (HRE) made peace with France and Brittany was forced to accept peace. Now danger of attack from France

Henry invaded France, but the timing (October) meant the campaigning season was nearly over and France was more concerned with events in Italy. France offered the Treaty of Etaples:
- France would not support English rebels
- France would pay most of Henry’s expenses from aiding Brittany
- Henry gained the French Pension of £5,000 per year (5% of his income)
Relations with France after 1492
England joined the Holy League in 1496, designed to push France out of Italy. Henry had just signed a trade deal with France. Clearly, he had done well as he kept his relationship with France while remaining a member of the Holy League
In 1508 Henry created the League of Cambrai, an agreement with England, France & Holland, against Spain. However, France withdrew just before signing as it didn’t want to antagonise Spain and the 2 countries joined. This made England isolated
Relations with Scotland
James IV wanted to assert himself by going to war with England and this was made easier by the arrival of Warbeck in 1495. He was given military aid but Warbecks invasion failed. James then abandoned him and agreed to the Peace of Ayton in 1497. This was the first peace treaty between the 2 since 1328. In 1503 James married Henry’s daughter, Margaret.
No full-scale war, but there were still skirmishes and the Auld Alliance remained
