What is Reinke’s Oedema
A
Reinke’s Oedema occurs where the surface of the vocal folds fill with fluid, becoming swollen and distended. Swelling is usually bilateral and symmetrical, but can occur
on one vocal fold more than the other. It is also known as Smokers Voice

What are some of the causes of Reinke’s Oedema
A
- Long term smoking
- Vocal abuse can also contribute - excessive and over-use of the voice, such as
shouting or screaming. - As the vocal folds are swollen, they can be more affected by reflux - see
additional information sheet.

What are some of the treatment options for Reinke’s Oedema
A
SLT’s will not get involved unless the person is willing to give up smoking/ take reflux medications
The treatment will depend on the cause, severity
- Lifestyle changes
- Surgery
- Voice therapy
- Reflux medication
