Reinforcement(skill Acquistion) Flashcards
Define behaviourism
operant conditioning us achieved via reward or punishment, which effects further actions
What are the 3 parts of reinforcement
- Positive reinforcement
- Negative reinforcement (this is not punishment)
- Punishment
What does SR BOND stand for ?
Stimulus response bond
Do both positive and negative reinforcement strengthen the SR bond
Yes
What impact does punishment have on the SR bond ?
A negative/ weaknesses
Define positive reinforcement
Positive reinforcement- rewarding the desired/correct response with praise for a “treat”
What is a sporting example of positive reinforcement ?
A coach praises a footballer for tracking back the opposing attacker
What impact does positive reinforcement have on the SR BOND ?
This strengthen the stimulus- response bond(S-R bond) making this response more likely to be repeated in the same situation in the future.
Define negative reinforcement
This is the removing an unpleasant stimulus when the desired behaviour is perform
Give an example of negative reinforcement
a coach will stop/ remove shouting at the peformer, which will encourage repetitive actions of the correct technique
What impact does negative reinforcement have on the SR BOND
This will also strengthen the S-R bond as performer will see when the correct action is performed
Define punishment
This involves adding an unpleasant consequences or removing a reward to discourage undesirable behaviour/response is displayed
Give an example of punishment
For example a player may be sent off for a reckless tackle, they could miss a game, be fined or lose their role in a team or a coach could shout at the player.
E.g a basketball player is benched repeatedly ignoring team tactics
What impact does punishment have on the SR bond
This weakens the S-R bond meaning that this action is less likely to be repeated in the future
