Peformance Analysis Flashcards
Define performance analysis(PA)
the systematic observation, recording and evaluation of an athletes peformance using qualitative and quantitive methods to improve decision marking, technique, strategies and overall effectiveness in training and competition. As well as improve the recovery process.
What is involved in PA ?
Indentifying strengths and weaknesses of individuals and team
Source of feedback for coach and performer
Creates reliable record of performance that can be analysed and broken down
Aids talent identification
What are the 5 factors for the coaching process diagram
Observation
Analysis
Evalutation
Feedback
Planning
What 4 factors are used to observe a player ?
Physical attributes
Technical ability and efficiency
Tactical awareness
Psychological factors
What is the word used to remember these factors
PPTT
P- physical
P- psychological
T-technical
T- tactical
How can the coach and performer use physical data ?
Identify strengths and weakness
Make large or finite changes to training programme
Set highly specific goals
Monitor progress of training or recovery
Allows for comparison against norms for the age group
What are the ways of analysing and refining peformance ?
Notational analysis
Biomechanical analysis
What is notational analysis
Notational analysis is where you analyse individual or team using Key performance indicators.
This is often done by pen and paper
Define biomechanics analysis
Biomechanics analysis is the study of human movement using physics and bodily mechanics to improve performance, technique and injury prevention in sport.
What are methods of notational analysis ?
- Hand Notation – Manual recording of events, but prone to errors.
- Computer-Based Notation – Software like Sports-code provides accurate analysis.
- Video Analysis – Reviewing footage to improve tactics and skills.
- GPS Tracking & Wearable Tech – Measures distance ,speed and workload
What are methods of Biomechanical analysis
- Qualitative Analysis – Observing movement visually (e.g., coaching feedback).
- Quantitative Analysis – Using measurements and data (e.g., force plates, motion sensors).
3.Kinetic force analysis- force plates(peak power, imbalances, rate of force development , force distribution- analysing force.
4.Kinematic- motion analysis- motion
What is post match/ computer analysis ?
The use of specialised computer software with a recording of the match with the coach or performance analyst noting several outcomes. E,g catapult, Veo, sports code
What is sports psychology analysis?
Looking into and tries to predict behaviour of athletes in certain and all situations.
What are the advantages of real time analysis(notational analysis)
Immediate information is provided to the coaches
Quicker than post match analysis
Coaches can act on this information to change players, tactics etc
Opposition can be analysed, changes can be made accordingly
risk of injury can be reduced
What are the disadvantages of real time analysis(notational analysis) ?
Limited amount of information can be recorded during live performance
Difficult to process, so much information for the recorder- leads to data overload- cognitive overload
Computer analysis requires specialist training
Some sports wouldn’t benefit from real time feedback
Introduce human error- can be subjective opinion which leads to human error.
Information Can be forgotten-30-50% of game play is retained per game(key moment only)
What are the advantages of Biomechanical analysis ?
Improves movement efficiency
Helps prevent injuries by identifying weakness in technique-movement correction
Enhances performance through optimising the way the body moves to get max physical output
Enhance technical feedback
What are the disadvantages of using Biomechanical analysis ?
Requires advanced technology and expertise in that area to maximise the equipment
Often is time consuming to break down and analyse
Very expensive to buy the equipment- not available to large amount of people
Difficult to interpret for performer- need good understanding of biomechanics
Difficult to conduct with younger performer due to technical and privacy reasons
What are some advantages of post match/ computer analysis ?
Permanent record of performance, which can be compared to past and present records
Quantify data- makes it easy interpret
Slow motion, freeze frame can provide precision analysis
Can be used for self analysis
Training can be made far more specific
A record of oppositions performance - aids understanding tactical side of the game
Visual feedback can be given
What are some disadvantages of post match/ computer analysis
Modern analysis computer programmes can be expensive
Specific training is needed to make full use of equipment
Very time consuming, a full match of any sports can take up to 20hrs to analyse fully
Technology can be too expensive- some clubs cannot afford the software- unfair playing field
Reliant on technology
Data overload
Why is psychological analysis used ?
This is used to help athletes mental state and decision making on the pitch- allowing them to have a better performance on the pitch and improve overall emotional health.
What are the 3 ways psychological analysis is conducted ?
Interview
Behavioural observation
Personality testing
What is an interview(in pe)
purposeful and organised chat which is carefully planed and deliberate- more formal than a chat. E.g diagnostic, case history, pre and post test interviews crisis interview pre therapy etc
What is behavioural observation ?
Vocal (e.g. sighing, tonality, intensity)
Facial expression (e.g. grimacing)
Gesture (e.g. rubbing)
Posture: excessive stiffness, compensatory positioning, referred to as bracing or guarding
Locomotion (e.g. limping)
Specific skilful activity: smooth vs. erratic patterns, range of motion (i.e.
What are some positives of PA in the media ?
Enhances viewers understanding
Educates and engages fans
Creates informed debates
Supports tactical awareness
Improves fan experience
What are some negatives of PA in the media ?
Over reliance on data
Misinterpretation of data
Bias in media’s analysis and opinions
Technological costs
Further Pressure on athletes
