Periodisation Flashcards
What is periodisation ?
Breaking the training programme into periods of time that will help the athlete reach their peak performance at a certain time.
What are the 3 cycles of periodisation
Macrocycle- 1-4 years
Mesocycle- 2 weeks- 6 months
Microcycle 1-14 days
What are the 3 distinct periods of periodisation
Preparation period- general conditioning and devlops fitness level
Competition period- refining skills and Maintain fitness levels
Transitional period- rest and recovery stage
What are the 5 sub phases of periodisation
General preparation
Specific preparation
Pre competition
competition phase
Recovery or transition phase
Name the 3 type of goals and focus of these goals
Outcome goal-what the athletes wants his result to be- e,g winning Olympic gold
Performance goal- personal standard or improvement e,g run x about of metres in a football game
Process goals- actions taken to get towards the other goals
What is tapering ?
Reducing the volume of training and/or the training intensity prior to major competition
What is peaking ?
Ensuring that both the body and mind are at their best possible condition for competition.
What is the aim of periodisation ?
The aim is to peak for a specific competition and develop specific components of fitness.
Optimise the rate of adaptation and maximise performance.
What is double periodisation ?
This is where an athlete must peak more than once within a season. E.g long distance athlete may need to peak in winter for cross country and track events in the summer.
