Rehabilitation of injury Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 stages of rehabilitation?
A
- Early stage: gentle exercise encouraging damaged tissue to heal
- Mid stage: progressive loading of connective tissues and bones to develop strength
- Late stage: functional exercises and drills to ensure the body is ready to return to training.
2
Q
What are the common sporting injuries?
A
- Simple fracture
- Stress fracture
- Dislocation
- Sprain
- Torn cartilage
- Exercise-induced muscle damage
3
Q
How are simple fractures treated?
A
- Medical attention ASAP
- PRICE
- Immobilisation (plaster cast, sling, crutches)
- Anti-inflammatory and pain medication
- Sever fractures may require surgery to realign bones
- Physiotherapy may be needed.
4
Q
How are stress fractures treated?
A
- Medical attention required for diagnosis and advice
- PRICE
- Immobilisation may be needed
- Rest for 2 weeks, avoid activity for 8 weeks
- Gentle return to exercise
- Strengthening exercises for surrounding connective tissue.
5
Q
How are dislocations treated?
A
- Medical attention ASAP
- PRICE
- Immobilisation, no attempt to reposition bones unless a medical professional
- Anti-inflammatory and pain medication
- Severe dislocations may require surgery to realign bones and pin them into their original position
- Physiotherapy will strengthen surrounding connective tissue and improve mobility.
6
Q
How are sprains treated?
A
- Medical attention may be required in severe cases
- PRICE
- Immobilisation or support using strapping, a brace, crutches
- Anti-inflammatory and pain medication
- Exercise to strengthen surrounding connective tissue and improve mobility and balance
- Heat therapy and contrast therapy can be used for pain relief.
7
Q
How is torn cartilage treated?
A
- Medical attention
- PRICE
- Immobilisation for support using strapping, a brace
- Anti-inflammatory and pain medication
- Arthroscopy surgery can be used to reshape and resurface torn cartilage
- Physiotherapy to strengthen surrounding connective tissue and restore range of motion
8
Q
How is exercise-induced muscle damage treated?
A
- In most cases, medical attention is NOT required and symptoms should be improved in 5 days
- Cold therapy such as ice pack, ice baths and post exercise
- Massage and stretching techniques
- Anti-inflammatory and pain medication
- Heat therapy and contrast therapy can be used for pain relief.
- Medical attention may be needed if heavy swelling or dark urine
