!!! Energy Intake, Expenditure and Balance in Physical Activity and Performance Flashcards
What is energy?
The strength required for sustained physical or mental activity.
What is energy expenditure?
The sum of the basal metabolic rate, the thermic effect of food and the energy expended in physical activity.
What is basal metabolic rate?
Basal metabolic rate (BMR): The minimum amount of energy to sustain essential physiological function.
What is the thermic effect of food?
Thermic effect of food (TEF)- Is the amount of energy it takes to eat, digest, absorb and use food taken in.
What is physical activity energy expenditure?
The energy expended during body movement. Calculated by multiplying MET by BMR.
What is metabolic equivalent (MET)?
The caloric consumption of an active individual compared with the resting basal metabolic rate at rest.
What happens if someone does not eat enough calories?
- Muscle loss
- Decreased intensity and duration of performance
- Increased risk of injury, fatigue and illness.
What equation must be remembered?
Energy expenditure = BMR + TEF + physical activity energy expenditure.
Why is it important for an athlete to calculate energy expenditure?
- Can calculate the overall energy cost of a training session
- Can adjust diet according to the number of calories burned.
- It estimates the energy cost of an activity to the amount of oxygen consumed.
