!!! Acute injuries Flashcards
What is an acute injury?
Acute injuries are sudden injuries associated with a traumatic event
E.g. fractured leg form a high tackle in football
What are fractures?
- Fractures are a partial or complete break of the bone.
- In simple fractures, the skin remains unbroken, inn compound fractures, fractures are where the bone breaks through the skin
What are hard tissue injuries?
Hard tissue injuries involve damage to the bone joint of cartilage, including fractures and dislocation
What are soft tissue injuries?
Soft tissue injuries involve damage to sin, muscle, tendon or ligament, including tears, strains and sprains
What are the signs and symptoms of a fracture?
Signs:
- Deformity
- Swelling
- Discolouration
Symptoms:
- Pain
- Inability to move the injured area
What are dislocations?
- Dislocation is the displacement of one bone form another out of their original position
- A dislocation occurs from a direct force (collision) or an indirect force (falling) pushing the joint past its extreme range of motion
- A subluxation often causes damage to ligaments and increases the likelihood of recurrent dislocations. This may compromise an athlete’s career
What are the signs of dislocation?
- Deformity
2. Swelling and discolouration
What are the symptoms of a dislocation?
- May feel a ‘pop’
- Severe pain
- Loss of movement
What is contusion and haematoma?
- A contusion (bruise) is an area of tissue where blood vessels have become damaged
- While it is usually a minor injury, severe contusion can cause deep tissue damage and ultimately a haematoma
- Haematoma is internal bleeding, ranging from minor bruises under the skin to deep tissue bleeding
What are the signs and symptoms of contusion/haematoma?
- Sign is welling and discolouration
2. Symptoms include pain
What is a sprain?
- Sprains are caused by a sudden twist, impact or fall that forces the joint beyond its extreme range of motion
- They are common at the ankle joint of games players
What are the signs and symptoms of sprains?
Signs:
- Swelling
- Bruising
Symptoms:
- Inability to bear weight
- Pain
What is a strain?
- A strain is a result of overstretching a muscle.
- They are common in dynamic lunging movements, such as lunging to return a drop shot in badminton
- A serious sprain of strain can result in a rupture
What are the signs and symptoms of a strain?
Signs:
- Swelling and discolouration
- Bruising
Symptoms:
1. Pain on movement
What is abrasion?
- Abrasions are superficial damage to skin caused by a scraping against a surface
- Most sports have blood rules, players have to leave the game until bleeding stops or is covered
