rehabilitaion of injury Flashcards
what are the two types of injurys
acute-sudden immediate pain
swelling aorund injurt
not being able to bear weight
chronic-pain after long time palyign sport
example of acute injuries
dislocations
sprain
strain
examples of chronic injuries
Achilles tendonitis
elbow tennis
fracture
break or crack of bone
may be simple and closed-means no penrateion through the skin or tissue
open and complex-penetration through the skin
higher risk of infection
OCCUPATIOANL THERAPY
disclocations
ends of bones are forced out of position
happen with fall or contact with another player
strains
torn or oulled muscle
muscle fibres are stretched too far and tear
sprains
torn ligaments
connet bone to bone
ligament is stretched too far and tears
happens when spinning
chronic injuries
pain wheen compete
dulla che when rest
swelling
3 types of chronic injuries
archilles tendositis
elbow tennis
stress fractite
sea
stress fracture
over use injury where area becomes swollen and tender
often happen in legs when theres increase in intensity
tennis elbow
muscles and tendons become inflamed
tiny tears occur at outside of elbow
occurs in tennis
arhilles tensosisit
over use injury that causes inflammation of tendon
screening
used to detect probelm before symetpoms occur
assesses muscle imbalances, cores strength and range of mobility
CRY scanning for children
issues-may be inaccurate
false postive-getting told you have somehting when you dont
false neagtive-miss the problem
warm up
3 stages
1.cardiovascualr endurace, cardiac ouput
oxygen to deliver to msuces
2.stretching
ballistic-boucing movements
passive-exernal force e.g partner
active-focuing on one joint and pushing past reisicne
static-no movement occurs
taping
gives estra support to prevent further injury
injruy rehabilitiaiton methods
proprioreceptive training
uses hopping and bouning movements
restores lost propriorecrptors
teaches body to conrol postion of injured joint
e.g balcne board
strengthens joint
strength training
uses resitance
therabands
free weights
resistance weigths
free weigths e.g dumbells used at later stages as perfomer has more of the control
machine weights-used at start as they have more of control
body weight-plank
therads-made of latex, can have different resictance strengths
max strength-high weight, low reps
muscular endurance-low weight, high reps
hyperbaric chambers
chamber is pressurasized
100% pure oxygen
pressure increases amount of oxygen that can be breathed in and more oxygen can diffuse into injured site
cryotherapy
use of cooling to treat injuries
e.g ice baths
chamber is cooled by liquid nitrogen
to below -100 degrees celcilus
perfomer stays in chamber for up to 3 mins, still wearing gloves and socks etc
blood from arms and legs flows towards the core in attmept to keep body warm and protect vital oragns from cold
leaving chamber, blood returns back to arms and leg providing oxygen to help heal injured cells
hydrotherapy
takes place in warm water
used to improve blood circaultion
relax muscles
buyoncy of water helps to support body weight
exercsing against restcince of waterr helps strengthen injured area
massage
prevets and relives soft tissue
increases blood flow to soft tissue
breaks down sacr tissue
foam rollers
releases tension
importance of sleep and nutriton
deep sleep improrant for muscle recovery
depest stage of sleep is third stage-non REM sleep
no aprid eye movemnt
brain waves are at there slowest and blood flow is disributied from brian to msucles to restore energy
seep too short time for repair is too short
sleep improant as glycogen stores need to be replensished
