regulatong glucose Flashcards
blood glucose concentration is
amount of sugar in out bloodstream
where are carbohydrates broken down what do they turn into
and where are they absorbed
intestines
glucose molecules
they are then absorbed into the blood stream which causes blood glucose concentration increase
where is the rise of blood glucose concentration detected
it is detected in the pancreas
in response releases hormone called insulin
what does insulin do
binds to receptors on certain cells which tells those cells to take in some of the glucose floating around in your blood
what is glucagon and glycogen
glucagon is a hormone
glycogen is a large molecule made up of lots of glucose
what does glucagon do
it is the opposite of insulin
it is located in the pancrease
it increases blood glucose rather than decreases it
how does glucagon increase blood glucose concentration
released by pancrease is is secreted into the blood stream and bind to a lot of cells and mainly liver cells taking the glycogen and break it down into lots of glucose molecules again.
and then release these glucose molecules into the blood
bringing the blood glucose concentration back up to normal.
what happens if blood glucose levels fall too low
there wont be enough glucose for tissues cells to respire
what are the two main organs that insulin stimulates to absorb glucose from the blood
liver and muscles
