endocrine system Flashcards
what does the endocrine system consist of
a series of gland throughout the body
what they have in common is they all secrete hormones which are small chemical molecules which are passed into the blood and passed throughout the whole body
what are certain receptors for
they are for certain hormones so the hormone acts as a signal
pituitary gland what does it do where is it
it tells the body what to do and tells other glans to release their hormones. it is attached to the brain but not apart of the brain
thyroid gland what does it do and where is it
produces thyroxine which regulates rate of metabolism and helps growth and development. located in the neck
pituitary gland how does it help the thyroid gland
if it detects low levels of thyroxine it stimulates the thyroid gland by releasing a hormone called tsh or thyroid stimulating hormone. this is called negative feedback
adrenal glands
it is located near the kidneys and produces adrenaline in flight or fight cases. it increases heart rate so blood pumping faster
pancreas
produces insulin and helps regulate blood glucose concentrations. meaning amount of sugar in blood stream.
testes
producing hormone testosterone and producing male gametes (sperm)
ovaries
produce oestrogen which influences puberty and menstrual cycle they also hold females gametes (eggcells)
differences between endocrine system and nervous system
endocrine relies on hormones which are transported in the blood
nervous system relies on electrical impulses which are transferred along nerve cells.
meaning hormones spread more slowly and effects last longer. where as nerve impulses are sent very fast and effects dont last long.
hormones act more generally.
nerve impulses are sent to one particular area.
