What is the IOPP and who is required to carry one?
International oil pollution certificate and it is required by tankers 150gt+ and other ships 400gt+
What surveys are required as per Annex I?
The certificate is valid for 5 years from initial survey.
Must undergo an annual survey within 3 months before or after each anniversary date of certificate.
Must have an intermediate survey not earlier than 6 months or later than 6 months from half way date of validity.
What document is a supplement to the IOPP?
Form A - Record of construction and equipment for ships other than oil tankers.
Form B - Record of construction and equipment for oil tankers.

What ships are required to maintain an oil record book?
Tankers 150gt and more and all ships 400gt and more must possess oil record book part 1 (machinery space operations).
Tankers over 150gt must possess oil record book part 2 (cargo/ballast operations).
What requirements must ALL vessels meet before they can discharge oil/oily mixture?
Ship must be en route.
Oily mixture must be passed through approved filtration.
Oily mixture must not contain more than 15 ppm
Must not originate from cargo space pump room bilges on tankers.
If a tanker oily mixture has not been mixed with oil cargo residues.
What requirements must the Oil Discharge Monitoring Equipment meet?
Approved by the administration
Continuous record of discharge rate
Must be used for every discharge made
Must stop discharge if rate of discharge is exceeded.
What requirements must vessels meet if discharging oil from the cargo tanks (including pump room area)?
Ship must outside a special area
Ship must be en route
Ship must be 50NM from nearest land
Discharge rate must not exceed 30 litre per NM.
The total quantity of oil discharged into the sea does not exceed for tankers deliver on or before 31 December, 1979.
1/15,000 of the total quantity of the particular cargo of which the residue formed a part. For tankers delivered after
31 December 1979- 1/ 30,000 of the total quantity of the particular cargo of which the residue formed a part.

As per Annex IV what requirements must ships meet
Must be fitted with sewage treatment plant or a sewage comminuting and disinfecting system or a sewage holding tank.
Comminuted and disinfected sewage may be discharged 3 miles from land.
Sewage no comminuted disinfected may be discharged more than 12 miles from land with the ship en route proceeding at not less than 4 knots.
What is the lenth of validity for the International sewage pollution certificate?
Specified by the administration and not to exceed 5 years.
What does a sewage comminutor do?
Reduces the particle size of wastewater solids.

What are the restrictions in discharging food wastes as per MARPOL?
As per MARPOL annex V
- Vessels must not discharge food wastes ground to 25mm or less within 3 miles of land and not less than 12 miles from land in special area.
- Vessels must not discharge unground food wastes less than 12 miles from land and discharge prohibited within special areas..
When did Annex 6 come into force and what is its aim?
Annex 6 came into force in 2005 and sets limits on:
Sulphur Oxide and nitrogen emissions from ships exhaust.
Prohibits any deliberate emission of ozone depleting substances.
